Do people really not understand economic cause and effect?

I agree. We do not have a free market economy anymore, and that's why it's in the toilet. Part of a free market is no minimum wage. It's not a very popular viewpoint, but I believe that it should be abolished. As far as taxing businesses, corporations certainly are not going to eat that cost themselves, they will p it along to us. Translation--worse for the economy.
