Walkie talkies or radios?

hello every one i live upstate ny and i need help most cell phones dont work up here and i need a way to keep my parents and i in touch within 4 devices . one for home and 3 for us . i was thinking walke talkies but i dont think they would work well between 40 miles etc . i was thinking like a cb radio system with my own tower at home that i could pay monthly but i got no idea how to find em . well summit your ideas and thanks for looking
